What Bactrim Tablets are used for

Bactrim Tablets are used for the treatment of infections caused by certain bacteria. The bacteria areSalmonellaspp.,Escherichia coliShigellaspp., andKlebsiellaspp. These organisms are able to multiply and cause infections in the body, including diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and other side effects. This includes vomiting that is not caused by the organism.

In clinical studies with patients infected withspp., Bactrim has been shown to be as effective as penicillin antibiotics in the treatment of infections caused by these organisms. However, in more recent studies, Bactrim has been found to have less severe side effects as compared with penicillin.

If you are taking Bactrim for the treatment of infections in which the bacteria are sensitive to sulfonamide antibiotics, such as pneumonia, your doctor may advise you to stop the antibiotic. However, it may take longer to stop the antibiotic if you have a weakened immune system. Stopping the antibiotic may also decrease the effectiveness of Bactrim.

If you are not sure whether you are taking any of these antibiotics, talk to your doctor.

If you are taking Bactrim for the treatment of infections in which the bacteria are sensitive to sulfonamide antibiotics, such asspp., tell your doctor immediately. Your doctor may need to change your dose of Bactrim to Bactrim IV for this use. Sulfonamides (e.g., sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) can be absorbed and are therefore important in the treatment of diarrhea caused by these organisms. Bactrim has less serious side effects than penicillin.
